The formation of Ambala Cantonment took place in the year 1843, as the Britishers had to
evacuate there then cantonment at Karnal as the malaria epidemic broke out there in 1841-42.
Ambala Cantonment is the center of Indian Army 2 Corps which is one the 3 Strike corps of the Indian
Army which holds strategic importance. It is also the oldest and largest airbase of Indian Airforce
which they inherited from the Britishers. The Airbase consists various aircrafts that are the part of IAF,
such as Vampires, Ouragans, Hunters, etc. all flew from this base. It was also attacked by Pakistan Air
Force's B 57 Bombers. Nowadays the Airbase abodes the '7 Wing' with squadrons of Jaguars and MiG
21 Bisons.
The Birthplace of Scientific Instruments Industry
Ambala is titled as the birthplace of scientific instruments industry of India. In the starting of the
previous century many efforts started to be made to begin the manufacturing of scientific instruments
in Cantonment. The initial efforts by a group of individuals bore the fruit as the establishment of
manufacturing units in Ambala and in present dealers prefer Ambala Cantt. who come from other states
as well as foreign to procure scientific instruments.
Before the scientific instrument industry started at Ambala, the educational institutions in India used to
buy their requirement of scientific instruments, chemicals, glassware, and microscopes from foreign
country such as UK, USA, France etc.which cause hinderence in study of science students.
When the scientific instrument industry was in infacny, there were neither infrastructure nor technical
knowledge about the process. Despite, the manufacturers carried on their efforts which has made this
place prominent for scientific instrument manufacturing. It was the result of their painstaking effort that
the apparatus like Geissler vaccum tube, which were only manufactured in Japan, started to be
manufactured at Ambala Cant by Mr. Desh Raj Tuteja.
