Haathi Khana Mandir dates back to 160 years when it is established by army men. The establishment of the
temple is associated to the arrival of British Troops in Ambala. Since then , this religious place has seen
many changes with the passage of time.
During British time , elephants were used as gun carriers by the army unit named "The Elephant Cavalry
Regiment".
The elephants of this unit were looked after and trained by mahouts from South India. Since the
Mahouts were religious men and devotees of lord Shiva. They have granted permission for establishment of
Shiv Temple there. It was named as Haathi Khana Mandir. After the Cavalry, it was looked after by priest,
and finally by registered trust.
