They've lured the tastebuds of several generations of school children with their chewy, fudgy sweetness. No trip to Dehradun was complete without a bag of the famous and long time favorite Kwality Toffees. It was in the early 1950s that Kwality's started churning out of this ambrosial confection- a seemless blending of liquid glucose, milk and "sugar essence". Kids buying tuck gave it the thumbs-up, and soon custom poured in from IMA, the FRI and the countless schools in the Doon and Mussorie. It didn't take long fro visiting tourists to zero in on its high "(Kw)ality".
Though Kwality's restaurant has changed hands since, the likes of Ellora Confectionery and Standard Bakery continue to uphold this toothsome tradition. Back in 1950s, Ellora was selling Kwality sweets for Rs 8-10 a kg; today a kg retails at Rs. 240. Strict quality control is the key.
Standing cheek-by-jowl with the hero in this success story is the humble rusk. Initially supplied by small bakeries in the 1940s, this humble crumb became a hot souvenir. Today, it is available in both round and oval (easier to dunk in tea!) shapes. Ellora even offers a sugar-free variety for diabetic customers.
