History Dehradun

Dehradun is the capital of State Uttrakhand, Sometime known as Doon Valley. According to Indian mythology, place is associated with great Indian epic Ramayana and Mahabharata. This Place is believed to be visited by Lord Rama and his brother Laxmana after battle with Ravana. Many temples and ruins found in Dehradun and its surrounding area are also believed to be linked with mythology of Ramayana and Mahabharata.

According to Huen Chan, a Chinese Traveler this area was known as Sudhnagar in 17th century later came to known as Kaalsi. Once the place was under the possession of Katyuris of Garhwal, after that this stronghold dynasty passes into hand of Nepali King Prithvi Narayan Shah. Deharadun along with few parts of Himachal Pradesh and Darjeeling were under the Nepal. After war with Nepal in (1814 to 1816), British East India Company got possession on Dehradun in 1816. After splitting from Uttar Pardesh in 2000, Dehradun became capital of new state Uttrakhand.
