Temple Architecture Chennai

KAPALEASHWARAR TEMPLE is a house of the god Shiva and the goddess Shakthi, located in Mylapore, Chennai. The presiding God of this temple is a form of Shiva called Kapaleashwarar. Nayanmars sing hymns in this temple. According to the Puranas, Shakthi worshipped Shiva, in the form of the Peahen, which is why the name Mylai was given to the area that developed around the temple, as 'Myil' means Peacock/Peahen in Tamil. The Pallavas kings built the temple.

PARATHASARATHY TEMPLE is an 8th century’s temple and is the one of the oldest temple in Chennai. It is dedicated to lord Krishna, located at Triplicane, Chennai. It is one among the 108 holy places of Lord Vishnu. Lord Krishna is worshipped in this temple in the role of charioteer of Arjun that the Parthasarathy means in Sanskrit. There are separate entrances for Lord Parthasarathy and Lord Narasimha. The gopuram (towers) and mandaps (pillars) are decorated with elaborate carvings.

SRI RAM KRISHNA MUTT
Swami Vivekananda, on the request to start a mutt from his devotees, sends his brother Swami Ram Krishnananda to Chennai in March, 1897 and he started the mutt here. It completed in 1997. And after then they increase the size of mutt. Swami Ranganandaji Maharaj ji called it a “Universal Temple” because it is not only a temple but also some services like schools, colleges, hotels, tribal works, and work during natural calamities continues inside the mutt.

MADHYA KAILASH is a Hindu temple in South Chennai, located at the junction between Sardar Patel Road, Adyar and Rajiv Gandhi Salai. It is located opposite the Central Leather Research Institute and is close to the Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai. The temple has become famous for its unique idol of "Adhyantha Prabhu", which is part Ganapathy and part Anjaneya i.e. right side is Ganesha and the left Hanuman.

THOUSAND LIHT MOSQUE is a beautiful multi domed mosque located at Anna Salai in Chennai and is one of the largest mosques in the country and is a revered place of worship for Muslims. It was built by Nawab Umdat-ul-Umrah in the year 1810.

VADAPALANI MURUGAN TEMPLE is a highly respected shrine situated at Vadapalani Chennai. The temple has Lord Velayudha (Muruga) as the main presiding deity. The wonderful 4 ft sculpture of the presiding deity is spectacular of all eyes. Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvathi, and Lord Ganesha are also worshipped here. Lord Hanuman's image is inscribed in a pillar. Butter offered by the devotees is applied to this Lord Anjaneya and the devotees pray for the fulfillment of their desires.

The Chennai ASHTALAKSHMI TEMPLE is situated in Besant Nagar, on the shores of the Bay of Bengal.  The temple's architecture is unique, with the deities installed in four levels.  The shrine of Mahaalakshmi & Mahaavishnu is in level two, facing the eastern horizon overlooking the sea. Walking upstairs to the third tier, the path leads to the shrine of Santaana Lakshmi facing south.  Next we get the darshan of Vijayalakshmi, on the western side on the 3rd tier. Vidyaalakshmi sites facing the northern side & the shrine of Gajalaskhmi are located facing the eastern side on the 3rd tier.  A flight of few steps above leads one to the 4th tier, where the Dhanalakshmi shrine is located facing eastward.  Here’s is the only shrine on the 4th level.  Exiting the main shrine - the principal deities, at the ground level on the southern flank of the gopuram is the shrine for Aadhi Lakshmi. 

The JAIN TEMPLE is 70 feet high structure is two tiered and is built of lime and soapstone and marble. On account of the use of marble, the Jain Temple has a very dazzling and glittering appearance. It is one of the finest examples of modern temple art. Popularly known as the Shantinath Jain Mandir. A visitor can reach the sanctum only after climbing a flight of stairs. The temple is open to people of all religions, but only those are allowed who have taken bath in the temple.  The biggest festival of the Jains is Mahavir Jayanti.

SAI BABA TEMPLE also known as All India Sai Baba Samaj is located in Mylpore, Chennai. This temple was built to commemorate the memory of Shirdi Sai Baba. The Sai Baba born in Shirdi as a Hindu was brought by a Muslim Fakir (Devotee) and became an exponent of Sufism. On Sundays Agni Pooja is performed here.
