History Chennai

This is a metropolitan city which play a great role in historical as well as the cultural development of India. Chennai was the band of villages perched amidst paddy fields, bordered by palm trees. The region around Chennai has also provide as an crucial administrative, military, and economic centre since the 1st century. This city was ruled by many South Indians like Pal lava, the Chera Dynasty, the Chola, the Pandya, but the origin of the metropolitan city started in the year 1639, when Francis Day and Andrew Cogan, two merchants of the East India Company, started a factory-cum-trading post here.

A settlement was built to serve as the control centre and it was completed on 23 Apr' 1640, St George's Day and was named as St George's Fort. The town precisely called George Town, was developed outside the ramparts of the fort. George Town had several crowded lanes and each lane dealt in special trade, serving the British colonists. The Colonial decree made connections with the villages, together with the settlement at San Thome that was established by the Portuguese in the 16th century. Pallava Port, Kapalesvara Temple and Parthasarathi Temple are still standing testimony of the Chennai since present age.

In the year 1746 French, who ransacked the town and the nearby villages. The britishers again took the charge of chennai in the year 1749, attributable to the Treaty of Aix-la-Chappell. They have also strengthen this area so that nobody can breakdown it. In the 18th century, britishers were also able to overcome most of the parts of area around Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka and founded the Madras Presidency. Under the influence of British, Chennai gone through various drastic changes, and become a noticeable city, with a strong naval base. Railways was introduced in the 19th century, and after that Chennai got linked with other important cities like Mumbai and Kolkata.

Chennai was also attacked during the World War. In the year 1947, when India became independent, Chennai was confirm as the capital of Madras State, and later it was named as Tamil Nadu in 1968. In the year 1997, it was changed from Madras to Chennai by the Government of Tamil Nadu. However, it is the colonial rule which developed Chennai into a major commercial center. In the present day, George Town houses most of the pioneer business headquarters, while the State Government has its nerve centre in the Fort St George.
