There is very interesting tale hide behind the origin of Bangalore word. According to legend King
Ballala of the Hoysala dynasty was got lost in the forest and was very hungry. Fortunately he found a
hut where the woman fed him “Boiled Beans”. King was so pleased with the woman generosity that he
named a place after the food “'bende kaalu ooru'” which means boiled beans. Though other fables say
that “Banalooru” much before existed than the king Ballala. It was shaped by Kempe Gowda, the rulers
who once show that the dog was being chased by the rabbit. He inspired by this incident and gave name
to this land “Gandu Bhumi” means warrior land. He constructed mud fort with the support of King
Achutaraya. Inside the mud forts, towns like Balepet, Cottonpet, and Chickpet are located.
Later on his son built four watch towers which were built on the boundaries of the city, exist even
today.
Bangalore was ruled by many dynasties such as Sultans, Marathas and by the British. It was during
British rule that Bangalore progressed by leap and bounds. The city witness many development during
British rule such as railway, telegraph, post etc.
After India got freedom in 1947, it was designated as the capital of Karnatka state. Since then, the city
is running on the progress way very fast which is attributed to its large scale industries and IT
Companies. In 2000, with the dramatic progress in IT sector it has been gained another name “the IT
capital of India”. The city of Bangalore has been officially renamed as Bengalooru in the year 2006.
Though the 'Bangalore' is used very commonly.
