It is believed that the Pandava the five brothers from the Great epic
Mahabharata established a place known as Suvarnaprasth which is now a days
known as Sonipat. Another legend ascribed it to Raja Soni, the thirteenth
descendent of Arjuna, one of the Pandava brothers. Sonipat was earlier known
as Sonprastha, which later on became Swarnprastha, meaning the "Golden
City", derived from two Sanskrit words, Swarn (Gold) and Prastha (Place).
Firstly the Sonipat is the district of Rohtak. On December 22, 1972 Sonipat is
known as the district. In the past time the name of Sonipat is the Swarnprasth
after that it is converted to Swarnpath and after that it is Sonipat. here is no
mention of Sonipat in the Mahabharata, although it has been noted much earlier
by the great grammerian Panini in his celebrated Ashtadhyayi. The town was
therefore already in existence around 600 B.C.
