The city of Coimbatore derives its name from Kongu. This actually refers to the Kongu ruler called Kovan, who used to rule
this region. He named his area as Kovanpudur. Gradually, it came to be known as Koyambuthur or Koyamuthur. Coimbatore
is the anglicized form of these names. If you refer to the station code of the Indian Railways, you will discover that
Coimbatore is abbreviated as CBE. There is also a popular belief that the city has derived its name after the presiding deity
of the town Koniamman and the Koniamman Pudur later came to be known as Coimbatore.
The history of it dates back to the
Sangam age. It has only nine taluks now, viz. Pollachi, Coimbatore(North), Avanashi,Palladam, Udumalpettai, Tirupur,
Valparai,Coimbatore (South) and Mettuppalayam. As per G.O.Ms. No. 617, 618 Revenue dt 24.10.2008, the four taluks from
Coimbatore District (i.e. Tiruppur, Udumalpet, Palladam and Avinashi and three taluks from Erode districts (i.e.Dharapuram,
Kangeyam and Perundurai were bifurcated and formed as Tiruppur District.
