Agra Fort

A massive complex known for its magnificent architectural styles and rare combination of aesthetic sensitivities of three Mughal kings-Akhbar, Jehangir and Shahjahan, the Agra Fort is of much historical importance.  Also known as the Red Fort or Lal Quila this walled palace looks like a small city within a city and was completed in a time span of 8 years.  The fortrecognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1983.

There are other distinctive structures within the walls of the Agra Fort. The stuning palaces and wells and the marvellous mosque ae worth praises. It is said tat the fort had more than 5000 structures, of which many were demolished.  Among the remaining 32 are the Akhbari-Gate, Bengali-Gate and the Delhi-gate. Originally there was a brick fort for the Sikanaur Rajputs. Sikandar Lodhi, who was the first sultan of Delhi also shifted here.

Within the beautiful red structure is the Diwan-i-am. Here sat the original peacock thrown embellished wuth rubies, sapphires and emaralds and the unmatched Kohinoor diamond, which now lies in the Tower of London.  Opposite the Diwan-i-Am is hauz-i-Khas. Inside the cistern is a Persian inscription which Jehangir's marriage to Mehrunissa(Noor Mahal) in 1611.

The other significant structure within the palatial boundaries is the Khas Mahal. This is known to be the private palace of Akhbar's son, Shahjahan. The Khas Mahal was built in 1637.
