Vivekananda College was established in 1970 in Gandhi Nagar by the Delhi Administration out of grants from UGC & Delhi Administration with a particular objective of giving opportunities for higher education to women in the Trans Yamuna area. The keystone of the current building was laid on 25th Oct 1976 by Prof. S. Nurul Hassan and the building was dedicated to Swami Ranganathananda of the Ramakrishna Mission in 1979.

The Vivekananda College has girls' hostels which came into effect from the academic session 2008-09 for approx 25-35 students coming from other states outside Delhi. The college plans to increase the number of seats in the hostel, as the construction of a separate hostel block is in the pipeline.
Various competitions like, debates, writing contests, poster-making and discussions are organized. A Students’ Union is an active organization, which, with the supervision of a committee of teachers, provides effective leadership in various activities geared to bringing out the best in the students by organizing educational tours, get-togethers etc. The highlight of the college is the inter college winter festival Pallavi, that showcases the multifarious talents and enthusiasm of the students. Vivekananda College Delhi also trains the students who want to take part in different games. Students achieve distinctions and many are selected for Inter University and National Games. The sports facilities provided by the college are: Athletics, Hockey, Cross country, Football, Softball and Baseball. Vivekananda College offers many UG and PG courses such as BA Programmes, BCom Programmes, and MA Programmes etc. It also offers a Certificate course in Spanish and spoken English.
Placement Cell of Vivekananda College has various objectives such as: Identification of student’s potential and mapping their competencies, classifying the database of students (their specialization, interest and academic performance), interlinking the enthusiastic talent ready to explore new horizons alongside the growing requirement of the corporate world.
