Established in 1998,
Visvesvaraya Technological University - VTU Belgaum was founded by Sir Mokshagundam Visweswaraiah.
VTU is the biggest Technological University in India, having 144 colleges affiliated to it, 27 disciplines for UG course and 66 disciplines for PG courses. 45,000 students are given admissions at the UG level and about 7,500 students at PG level. Currently more than 1000 students / faculty are registered for PhD degree and over 180 students are registered for their Msc.Engg. In the year 2006-07 the faculty had published around 300 research publications. VTU has newly started MBA and M.Tech. Programs at Belgaum with about 250 students enrolled in all. 16 affiliated colleges were also recognized to get support under the World Bank.
VTU has very fruitfully achieved the incredible task of bringing many colleges affiliated earlier to other Universities, with different syllabi, different procedures and different traditions under one umbrella. The University implemented common programs for UG in 1998 and modified syllabi once more in 2002 where all the courses and uniform procedures were accepted. Furthermore, the subjects & syllabi of related branches are being made common up to the fourth semester. VTU Belgaum has already modified the syllabus of MBA with effect from the academic year 2001-2002 and has now modified the syllabi of all M.Tech & MCA courses. The University further plans to bring in flexibility in the curriculum, so that any modification or revisions may be introduced mainly with respect to electives, as and when the technology changes or the need arises.
Located on Santibastawad Road Machhe Belgaum, Karnataka, VTU intends to have global electronic existence by creating data network, linking the VTU campus at Machche, four regional offices and all the affiliated colleges of VTU in a safe private network and open up access to this network to the global population for mutual learning using Internet technology.
The campus network at VTU uses the state of art network tiered architecture with Edge and Core switches and scalable distributed network topology meets the computing needs of PG students, offer eLearning atmosphere, access to digital library, support examination, administration work and most importantly have adequate bandwidth for Video conferencing from any network access point. Furthermore, the VCONET: VTU Colleges Network will facilitate sharing of faculty expertise among colleges, cooperation among peer groups, even out digital disparity among rural and urban engineering colleges, provide infrastructure for online examination system, portal to different digital libraries around the world and support many more modern applications on the net anticipated in coming time. VTU offers PG and UG Courses to the students such as Me Board, Cse Board, It Board, Civil Engg Board, Mech Engg Board, Elect Engg Board, E&C Board.
VTU has MOU’s with many leading organizations like IBM, INTEL Asia Electronics Inc., Ingersoll-Rand (India) Ltd., Bangalore and Microsoft. These MOU’s will help to train the teachers, conduct teachers training workshops and help the colleges affiliated to the University to get software at an extremely subsidized rate. Intel has helped in arranging many training programs for Engineering College Teachers. 153 teachers were also trained by Microsoft. These MOU’s have helped the University as many of these industries are showing enthusiasm in participating in the curricular activities of the University and the University is conferring with them for the same.
VTU two new programs have also been introduced which are B.Tech in Information Technology and B.Tech in Electrical Engineering with an intake of 60 students from the session 2001-2002 and 2002-2003 respectively.....Reading in short
