Established in 1922 as a unitary, teaching and residential university by an Act of Central Legislative Assembly,
University of Delhi South Campus - DU South Campus was the first university of India and is recognized for its high standards in teaching and research. Before, only three colleges were recognized in Delhi: St. Stephens College, Hindu College and Ramjas College, which were affiliated to the University and had only two faculties (Arts and Science) and about 750 students.

The nucleus of DU South Campus was shifted to Viceregal Lodge in October 1933 and till today it is an important campus of the University. The important departments of Faculty of Science are in the Vice regal Lodge Estate with the exception of central administrative offices, examination offices and the sports complex. The then Vice Chancellor, Sir Maurice Gwyer understood the significance of a eminent faculty, looked for talent all over India and brought men of eminence to DU South Campus such as Prof. D S Kothari (Physics), Prof. T R Sheshadri (Chemistry), Prof. P Maheshwari (Botany) and Prof. M L Bhatia (Zoology).
Over the last 70 years the University has developed into one of the biggest universities in the country. Today, there are 14 faculties, 86 academic departments and 79 colleges spread all over Delhi, with about 2,20,000 students. To deal with this huge expansion.
DU South Campus in the early seventies initiated a new organizational pattern which was based on the multi-campus concept. In 1973 the South Campus started their PG programmes in a rented building and these programmes were offered by some departments of Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.
The campus of DU acquired land near Dhaula Kuan where Arts Faculty building was constructed. In 1983, offices and teaching activities were shifted to this campus. The East Campus has its nucleus as University College of Medical Science, while the West Campus has its focus on Engineering and Technology. In the early sixties, 6 were awarded to DU South Campus out of 18 centres when the University Grants Commission started establishing Centres of Advanced Studies in the country. These centers were in Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Economics and Sociology. They are now the centre of excellence in teaching and research in their individual areas. The University of Delhi South Campus - DU South Campus has 15 libraries in addition to Libraries in the Colleges.
University of Delhi South Campus - DU South Campus Science Instrumentation Centre (USIC) has a variety of sophisticated research instruments which are also used by several departments of the University and also by other institutions in Delhi.
