Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey Womens University - Mumbai was founded in the year 1896. In December 1915 Karve in his presidential address to the National Social reform Congress at Bombay declared his decision to shape his dream into reality and in 1916 the first college started with the enrollment of five students which slowly took shape as Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey Womens University.

To commemorate the memory of Sir Vithaldas Thackersey mother, Nathibai, the University was named as Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey Womens University. In 1936, the head office of Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey Womens University - Mumbai was shifted to Bombay. The University continued to mature, providing higher education to women.

In 1951, the University was granted statutory recognition and was renamed as Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey Womens University now commonly known as SNDT Women’s University. The campuses of the university are spread across total area of 54 acres. The academic support services and facilities consist of computer centre, laboratories, and library and information services. Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey Womens University - Mumbai main library at Churchgate has two branch libraries one at Juhu and the other at Pune, and two study centres at Santacruz and Ghatkopar, Mumbai.

Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey Womens University - Mumbai has three auditoriums – one each at Three of its campuses, Parker hall at Churchgate (700 seats), J.H. Mini Auditorium (125 seats) at Juhu and F.Z.Tarapore Hall (500 seats) at Pune in addition to committee rooms at Churchgate and Juhu which are awaiting completion. Each campus has a hostel and a canteen.
