Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology-SVNIT Surat is among the 20 National Institutes of Technology NITs founded in India in June 1961. The institute is named after the country’s first Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. This institute was promoted to a level of National Institute of Technology as per the NIT Act.

Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology-SVNIT has eleven hostels in total out of which nine are for males and two are for females which accommodate a total of over 3000 students. The allowed intake of B.Tech students is at present 702 as of the academic year 2009. Half of the seats are taken up by Gujarat State students and the remaining half of the seats are reserved for the students from other states with a fixed quota for every state. But, as per the Corrigendum issued by the Ministry of Human Resource Development on June 13, 2008, it was declared that the state quota's were removed and those 50% of seats were to be filled as per the All India merit basis. In addition to national students, twenty international students are also admitted under the scheme of the Central Government.
A branch of the State Bank of India (with an ATM facility), Canara Bank ATM is also present in the campus along with a post office in one complex. The campus also has an A.C Gymnasium with state-of-the-art equipments, an indoor badminton court, billiards table and table tennis tables placed in the Students Activity Center.
Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology-SVNIT also has a library with many facilities like CCTVs and a kiosk machine where one can check-in or check-out books at once. The library which was set up in the year 1968, has built a huge collection of books, journals and non-book materials. Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology-SVNIT has programmed all its house-keeping activities using global software which is looked after and updated frequently. It also helps industries, individual consultants and corporate to look at online database and journals.
Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology-SVNIT in total has six departments for six main engineering fields, that is, Electronics engineering, Electrical engineering, Computer engineering, Mechanical engineering, Chemical engineering and Civil engineering. In addition to these, it also has a Department of Applied Physics, Department of Applied Chemistry, Department of Applied Mathematics & Humanities and Applied Mechanics. The departments of Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering have been given an 'A' grade by the National Board of Accreditation. The institute also offers postgraduate programs in M.Tech. in Environmental engineering, Structural engineering, Water-resources engineering, Turbo Machines, Mechanical, Electronics and Chemical Engineering as well as Doctoral programs Ph.D. The Admissions to the undergraduate programs are done through competitive exams i.e. AIEEE, while the admission to the post-graduate programs requires top score in GATE.
