Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law-RGNUL, Punjab was founded at Patiala in the year of 2006 by the State Legislature by passing the Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Punjab, Act, 2006. The University got itself registered with the University Grants Commission, New Delhi, under Section 2(f) of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956. It also has the approval of the Bar Council of India for giving professional legal education.

Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law-RGNUL follows the semester system where social science subjects are taught together with law for the first two years. Internship of the University is an essential part for the students and has been divided into two stages through the Initial and the Advanced Internship Programmes.
The fully residential and self-sufficient campus of the college has an Administrative cum-Academic Block, separate spacious Library, Auditorium, Sports Complex, Boys and Girls Hostels, Guest House, Community Hall, Health Centre, Shopping Centre residences and other facilities etc. Mooting is one of the most important academic exercises promoted in
Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law-RGNUL. The University encourages its students to participate in as many national and international moot court competitions as possible. The University moot policy is supported by the keen interest of the dedicated faculty members. The well resourced library, computer lab with internet and well furnished Moot Court Hall, provide an ambiance favorable for the students to focus on the legal debates at various moots.
The
Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law-RGNUL Library is known to be one of the best law libraries in India. The Library has a collection of more than 20000 Volumes covering an extensive range of general and special subjects that consist of text books, reference books, volumes of journals, reports etc. as well as the current legal periodicals. The RGNUL Library presently subscribes to 45 Law Journals and about 25 magazines. Keeping in mind the importance of technology in legal education, all the students are expected to have a laptop. Other than the personal laptops the students may also have access to two fully equipped centrally air conditioned computer labs with about twenty computers each.
The
Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law-RGNUL Campus has high-tech fitness centre, designed only for its students. Other than the Gymnasium, students have been provided with others sports facilities that also include Football, Table Tennis and Badminton.
