Panjab University - PU Chandigarh was founded during the period of more than 125 years of its long service to the nation. It was originally set up in 1882 at Lahore in Pakistan which is a source of inspiration for the present generation of faculty members and students. Considering its age, experience, achievements and philosophy, the Panjab University - PU Chandigarh is a University of national character and stature. After the partition in 1947, the University was forced to function for almost a decade without having a campus of its own.

Panjab University - PU Chandigarh is situated at Chandigarh. After the partition of India the administrative office of Punjab University was situated at Solan and the teaching departments functioned from Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar, Delhi and Amritsar. It was in 1956 that the University was moved to Chandigarh. Its red sandstone campus, designed by renowned French architects, Pierre Jeanerette and Le Corbusier came up within a few years. Till 1966, the University had its regional centers at Rohtak, Shimla, Jalandhar and its affiliated colleges were situated in the states of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and U.T. of Chandigarh. Some of the Colleges which are till today affiliated by Panjab University - PU Chandigarh are D.A.V. College, Sec. 10,Govt.College for Boys, Sec.11,Govt. College of Education, Sec. 20,Dev Samaj College for Women, Ferozepur, R.S.D. College, M.R.Govt.College, Chandigarh College of Engineering .and Tech., Sec 26 etc.

The main campus Panjab University - PU Chandigarh is spread across 550 acres in sectors 14 and 25. Sector 14 has the main academic and administrative buildings, a health centre, a sports complex, hostels and residential area. The College campus Students Council and departmental societies organize various kinds of Academic, Cultural, Social and Extra-curricular activities from time to time to promote students involvement and participation.

The Panjab University - PU Chandigarh Campus teams are selected, trained and financed to participate in various inter-College and inter-University Cultural and Literary competitions. The students take part in inter-college and inter-university cultural and literary competitions, zonal youth festivals, hiking and trekking expeditions, rock climbing, mountaineering and youth leadership training camps. These programmes are organized and coordinated mainly by the Cultural Coordinator / Director, Youth Welfare and the Dean Student Welfare.

Panjab University - PU Chandigarh offers different courses such as Graduate, Post Graduate Courses and Diploma is various subjects. The University also offers Open Learning Courses. In addition, University Offers Ph.D in: Centre for Women Studies, Defence Studies, Economics, Gandhian Studies, Geography, History, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, Public Administration, Sociology, Chinese/Tibetan, English, French, Hindi, Punjabi, Russian, Urdu/Persian,etc.

MPhil for various subjects such as M.Phil. Economics, Gandhian Studies, Geography, Political Science, Psychology, Public Administration, Sociology, Women/Gender Studies, English, Guru Granth Sahib Studies, Punjabi, and Physical Education are also offered.
