Kamala Nehru College was established on 20th July 1964. It was then known as the 'Government College for Women' and it was housed in Defence Colony.

Kamala Nehru College started out with just 16 staff members & 209 students passed out in the first batch in 1968. The College Magazine 'Swati' was started in the academic year 1965-66. In 1966-67, the College was renamed 'Modern College for Women' and in 1967-68 the College Magazine took the new name 'Apoorva'. Kamala Nehru College initially offered courses only in the Arts Stream. The Commerce Stream was added later. The founder Principal was Dr.K.K. Gorowara.
Kamala Nehru College has placement Cell was instituted in 2006 with the aim of not only making students aware of current placement opportunities and familiarizing them with the skills they will require when they enter the job market but also making them aware of the variety of options available to them post graduation in terms of courses and higher education.In the year 2007-08, the Placement Cell under the convenorship of Dr. Rupali Bhardwaj and Ms. Ira Gaur provided a platform for organizations from diverse sectors of the corporate world like Ernst and Young, Siemens, lTC-Welcome Group, IBM Daksh, Oberoi Group of hotels, Google, Genpact, E-Value Serve, ICICI Prudential Life Insurance and Matrix cellular services to come to college for campus recruitment drives.
