The College was established in 1933 as a Bombay University Department of Chemical Technology known worldwide as UDCT by the explicit desire and money of industrialists and philanthropists, to cater to the requirements of the Chemical Industry. The University of Mumbai awarded the autonomous status on the UDCT in 1994, with concurrence from the Maharashtra State Government and the UGC. On 12 September 2008, the ICT was given the Deemed-to-be University status under Section 3 of the UGC Act 1956. Now it is known as the Institute of Chemical Technology Deemed University, and is working as per the Statutes, Ordinances, Regulations and Rules of its own.
Institute of Chemical Technology - ICT Mumbai is spread over an area of about 16 acres 65,000 m2. Other buildings in the campus include three boy’s hostels, two ladies hostels, faculty and staff apartments which are located behind the main building.
Institute of Chemical Technology - ICT Mumbai situated in the heart of Mumbai city; the Professor M.M. Sharma Library attracts a variety of readers, students, scholars, technologists and industrialists. The library has a specific collection in the field of chemistry / chemical engineering / chemical technology and possesses some of the rarest reports and books. It has over 38200 books, over 25290 journals and over 10000 standards and subscribes to 120 international and 25 national journals. In addition there are more than 3000 theses, 925 reports, 16000 microfilms/ microfiches and 30 CD-ROMs. It has signed MOU with BONET for participating in exchange program devised by MISSAT, DST, New Delhi.
The faculty and alumni have been linked with the central and state governments. The alumni of the college participate in several Government committees like those of Department of Biotechnology, Department of Science and Technology, MHRD, AICTE, etc. The involvement of Institute in framing of National policies can be seen from the fact that alumni and faculty members have been the members of bodies like Planning Commission, Scientific Advisory Committee to the Prime Minister, to the Cabinet, to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and to the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers. Thus, the Institute enjoys an important position in Academic, Industrial and Government circles.
Institute of Chemical Technology - ICT Mumbai offers four years Degree programs in Chemical Engineering B.Chem Engg, in Pharmacy B.Pharm Sc. and B.Tech in 7 branches of Chemical Technology Dyes, Foods, Oils, Paints, Polymer, Pharmaceutical and Textile. The eligibility for these courses is 12th science. Admissions for All India Seats are done by MUICT and the remaining seats are filled by the Directorate of Technical Education, the Government of Maharashtra. Admission for Masters Programs is done in accordance with the UGC norms and GATE is required as an eligibility criteria. For Doctorate in Engineering, Technology, Pharmacy and Sciences, UGC / CSIR rules are followed for usual UGC sponsored seats in addition to endowment and other project positions.....
