Indian Institute of Technology - IIT Roorkee completed 150 years of its existence in October 1996. On September 21, 2001, IIT Roorkeewas declared as the nation's seventh Indian Institute of Technology by an Ordinance issued by the Government of India. The Ordinance is got converted into an Act by the Parliament to make IIT Roorkee as an "Institution of National Importance".
IIT Roorkee offers UG courses in 10 different disciplines of Engineering and Architecture and PG courses in 55 disciplines of Engineering, Applied Science, Architecture and planning. The Institute also offers courses for doctoral work in all Departments and Research Centers. Students in IIT Roorkee are admitted to B.Tech and B.Arch. courses through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) held at various centers all over India. The institute aims to be the fountainhead of novel ideas and innovations in science and technology and continue to be a source of pride for all Indians. A State of art Cyber Cafe, managed by students is in every hostel of IIT Roorkee. All hostels are completely Wi-Fi connected. Seven Boys' Hostels namely: Azad Bhawan, Cautley Bhawan, Ganga Bhawan, Govind Bhawan, Jawahar Bhawan, Rajendra Bhawan, Ravindra Bhawan, and two Girls' Hostels namely: Sarojini Bhawan, Kasturba Bhawan are in IIT Roorkee. A year-wise hostel system has now been replaced by a mixed hostel system where students of all years and branches of study live together in perfect harmony.
The students are always on their toes given the competitive academic environment and co-curricular activities in IIT Roorkee. For relaxation, clubs at IIT Roorkeeare the best place to hang out which are: the Hobbies club, the U.G. club, the P.G. club, the Alaknanda club and the Jawahar club house. The indoor sports facilities include seven Billiards & Snooker Tables, Carrom boards, Chess boards, Table Tennis facilities and a Foosball table. The hobbies club also has sections which are devoted to pursuits like star-gazing, philately and numismatics, and robotics. The clubs also have reading rooms where one can find plethora of newspapers and light magazines.
