Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, Government Medical College and Hospital- GMCH is the leading institute of the country. The college was set up in 1947 AD and was inaugurated by the former President of India Dr. Rajendra Prasad.

Government Medical College and Hospital- GMCH first batch started in July 1947 but in fact the students were admitted to L.M.P course in 1946, these were the students from Nagpur and Sagar University. The selection was done through merit in inter science grade and was followed by an interview.
Initially, Government Medical College and Hospital- GMCH was started in the engineering School campus, Sadar. The pre-clinical classes were held in the same campus, while clinics were held in Mayo Hospital. An entrance examination was introduced in 1952 and the very next year it was discarded. The degree program was of five years with no internship. It was separated into two years of Anatomy & physiology, Two years of Pathology, Pharmacology and Forensic medicine, while the final had Surgery, Ophthalmology & Gynecology. The internship was initiated from 1953 batch, and it was of 9 months duration in district hospital and 9 months in village dispensaries.
Within a year of its being, the nurses hostel and present hostel no.1 building was ready for occupation in the year 1949 itself .In the beginning the hostel no.1 was allotted as boys hostel, while the girls students used to accommodated in nurses hostel.
Government Medical College and Hospital- GMCH offers a many courses in medical science as well as nursing and as a result, it is also approved by Nursing Council of India.....Reading in short
