Government College of Art - GCA is affiliated to Panjab University, Chandigarh. It is an old Art college in India. During British Rule in India, it was being run under the name of Mayo School of Art at Lahore (Now in Pakistan). Sir John Lockwood Kipling was the founder of the Government College of Art.
Mr. Nath Gupta was the first Indian principal of the college in 1930. At the time of India's partition in 1947, Pakistan became a new country that got separated from India.
.....Continuing reading Lahore became the major part of Pakistan and The Mayo School of Art was left over there (which is now known as National College of Art, Lahore). To fulfill the need of Art College in India, the Indian Government established a “School of Art in Shimla” on 16th August 1951 that started following the pattern of Mayo School of Art, later it was known as Government School of Art and Craft.
S.L Prasher was appointed as a school organizer, initially he was the vice principal of Art School of Lahore at the time of partition. The College shifted to its present location in 1962, when Chandigarh started serving Panjab and Haryana as a capital. Today it is located in Sector 10-C, Chandigarh.
Government College of Art - GCA is one of the best institutes for advance training in Visual Arts in India. The College is well known for its dedicated and experienced faculty. It provides hostel facilitates in the International Hostel, Sector 15, Chandigarh. Girl’s hostel is also situated in the Government Polytechnic for Women Sector 10, Chandigarh which is located within a stone's throw of campus. College has fully fledged computer labs that consist of modern facilities along with the AC facilities. The College has well maintained library that is a home for almost 8000 books on different subjects.
Government College of Art - GCA organizes many sports and cultural activities every year, the students take part in college and inter-college tournament. It also provides facilities for indoor and outdoor games such as Badminton, Volley Ball, Basket Ball and Table Tennis. The College has spacious galleries which have become an amazing venue for a number of shows, annual art and exhibitions. The campus has Art Material shop inside the college that also includes the stationery items. The college auditorium is venue for all film screenings, slide shows, and special lectures, Convocations and dramatic shows as well as all college functions. The college has its Citco's canteen at leisure valley, near the campus. Besides this, College also provides medical facilities to the students.
Government College of Art - GCA offers Courses such as Bachelors of fine Arts, Master of Fine Arts, and Foundation course. It also provides Specialization in Painting, Sculpture, Graphics (Print Making) and Applied Arts. The college has also started Special Diploma Course in Fine Arts for Physically and Mentally Challenged persons. The course offers 4 seats, one seat in each of the disciplines viz. Painting, Sculpture, Graphics (Printmaking) and Applied Art. The mentally challenged persons are eligible for the seats of Painting and Applied Art.
Government College of Art - GCA provides an opportunity for the students as a freelance artists, designers and visualizers, in advertising agencies, publishing houses as newspaper designers, newspaper reporters, government or private establishments, lecturers, teachers, curators, art appreciators or critics, administrators of art programmes etc. The students enjoy getting work during their courses.
