Cochin University of Science and Technology - CUSAT Kochi was founded in 1971 and was a commitment from the Government of Kerala towards the new scientific policy resolution adopted by the Central Government on 4th March 1958. The University of Cochin was later known as Cochin University of Science and Technology in February 1986. Cochin University of Science and Technology - CUSAT Kochi has got into academic collaborations and exchange programmes with many notable institutions across the USA, Europe, Russia, Japan, France, Korea etc. Situated 10 kms north of Ernakulam city and 20 kms south of Nedumbassery International Air port, on about 180 acres in Thrikkakara, the main campus is serene and beautiful.
Cochin University of Science and Technology - CUSAT Kochi main campus has teaching and research departments, auxiliary institutions, hostels, guest house, visiting faculty complex, computer centre, administrative office, central library, staff quarters, post office, bank, health centre, telecom centre, play grounds and courts and a gymnasium. Another campus of university is situated in Ernakulam, by the side of the sea, and has School of Marine Sciences, School of Industrial Fisheries and men's hostel. Admissions to CUSAT are based on an All India Entrance Examination known as Common Admission Test (CAT) conducted by the Cochin University of Science and Technology which comprises of different papers for admissions to various undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Various Departmental Admission Tests (DAT) are also conducted for some postgraduate programs. The university has three different campuses, two of them are in Kochi and one is in Pulinkunnu, Kuttanad, Alappuzha about 65 km south of Cochin in the state of Kerala.
The University Library is fully automated and is one of the best scientific and technical libraries in India. The Library has a collection of more than 70000 volumes, 280 current journals, 560 theses and 80 CD-ROMs and offers Loan service, Inter-Library Loan, Literature Search, Reference Search, Compilation of Bibliographies, Reprographic Service, Reprint Service, Conference Alert Service, New Addition Alert Service, Patent Information and Consultancy Service. It also provides online access to most of the international journals and a database of “Current Contents’ is maintained to support the research needs of the students.
A Placement Centre for B. Tech. Engineering students publishes information about employment opportunities and makes information available about higher education. Placement talks and Campus interviews are also organized for students. The Center has been able to secure desirable jobs in multinational companies and Government agencies for a large number of students.
Limited hostel accommodation is offered for Postgraduate / Research students (three hostels for Men & two for Women in the Main campus and one hostel for Men in the Lakeside Campus). In total, they can accommodate 500 men students and 300 lady students. A number of private-owned hostels with mess are also available around the Main Campus and in the nearby towns of Aluva and Ernakulam. Private lodges also rent out rooms to students at concessional monthly rates. Local residents in the city around the Main Campus offer limited ‘Paying - Guest’ accommodation to students.
