Ujjain is one of the largest cities in Madhya Pradesh, situated on the eastern bank of the Kshipra River. The city is approximately 5000 years old, located on the Malwa plateau of central India. Ujjain was once the ancient capital of Avanti kingdom, which is one of the sixteen mahajanapadas.
Ujjain is also called as the city of Mahakal, because of the shrine of Lord Shiva. It was previously known by many names like Kushsthali, Avanti, Kanashringa, Padmavati, Bhaumvati and Pratikalpa. The city is also popularly known for its Simhastha Mela (Kumbh Mela), which is celebrated after every 12 years in the city. Ujjain is one of the selected hundred cities to be developed as smart cities under the PM Narendra Modi’s flagship Smart Cities Mission.
