Salem is one of the districts of the Tamil Nadu state in southern India, surrounded by hills from all sides. The city was once the part of Chera dynasty and was ruled by King Kurunila Mannargal. After that, it was ruled by Gatti Mudalis, who constructed many forts and temples throughout the city. It is situated at a distance of 160 kilometers from the northeast of Coimbatore. There are more than 125 weaving units, garment units and spinning mills in the city. The city is also known as the Steel City and the Mango City. Apart from these, Salem houses a number of sago factories for the production starch.
