Currently known as Rupnagar, Ropar is the district in Punjab. It is situated north to Himachal Pardesh while Chandigarh is at the North West.
It is the ancient city that has been witness to the world’s first civilization, The Indus valley civilization. Ropar is believed to be founded by Raja Rokeshar who named it after his son Rup Sen in 11th century. Before came into the hands of the British it was ruled by Raja Bhup Singh.
Ropar is the district of many historical and revered places of the Sikhs such as Chamkaur Sahib, Anadpur Sahib and Kiratpur Sahib. Many great historical events took place such as War against tyranny of Mughals of Sikhs, Formation of Khalsa and the rise of Sikhism in Ropar.
Morinda, Nangal, Kiratpur Sahib, Chamkaur Sahib, Anadpur Sahib and Kamlapur are the important cities of Ropar. One of the prestigious institutions of India IIT Ropar is situated in the city.
