Once known as the Cantonment City of the British, now the home to many well known Educational and Research Institutes, Roorkee has become a well known center for education and research. Roorkee has contributed to the national development by producing the finest quality engineers from the renowned University of Roorkee, now called the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee. · Hydraulic Research Station ( Bahadrabad )

Roorkee is also the place where the first locomotive engine named Mary Lind, especially shipped from England moved on rails in India. Mary Lind ran in year 1846, well before the first passenger train from Bombay to Thane. Also, the first irrigation project started in Roorkee with the construction of the country’s first aqueduct on the Solani river
