Karur is one of the oldest towns in Tamil Nadu located on the banks of Amarvathi River. It is situated at a distance of 370 kilometers southwest of the state capital Chennai. This town has a very long and old history, which plays an important role in the development of traditional art in Tamil Nadu. Its history dates back over 2000 years when it has been a flourishing trading centre in the early Sangam days. Karur was ruled by the Cheras, Gangas and Cholas in the ancient and medieval times. Later in 1783, when Britishers destroyed Karur Fort during their war against Tipu Sultan, they added Karur to their possessions and afterwards it became the part of British India.
Karur district have 6 taluks, 2 Revenue Divisions, 2 municipalities, 203 revenue villages, 157 village panchayats and 11 town panchayats. Karur is well known for its paper, bus body works industries, handloom and power loom textile produces.
