Overview Rourkela

Rourkela is derived from the two words Rour means ‘your’ and ‘kela’ means village means 'your village'. Rourkela located in the northern part of Odisha. Rourkela is the second largest city of Odisha. A steel plant is situated in Rourkela because the area near Rourkela is rich in iron. The city is considered as Odisha's commercial capital because of the steel industry. Rourkela has a well-developed rail connection to Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Jamshedpur and Nagpur. Rourkela has a hilly and undulating topography. Rourkela was once surrounded by forests. These forests were favourite hunting ground for the kings in the past.
The Bengal-Nagpur Railway Company constructed the Howrah Nagpur railways that ran through Rourkela. The area around the railway station of Rourkela was declared as an urban town in the year 1931. In 1950s to 1960, the town was the largest German colony.
Entabatti and Phulbari are famous older part of the city. The Indira Gandhi Park is a major tourist attraction of the city.
