Road
The National Highways National Highway 7 (India) (Old numbering), NH 49, NH 208 and NH 45B goes through the Madurai district while the SH-33, SH-72, SH-73, SH-72A, SH-73A are the state highways connected with the Madurai’s different parts. Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation is headquartered at Madurai. The bus services are served to four districts such as Madurai, Virudhunagar, Dindigul and Theni. There are three major bus terminals of Madurai are MIBT (Mattuthavani Integrated Bus Terminus), for inter-city buses Arappalayam and for Intra city buses Periyar Bus Stand. For the public transport system, city buses are operated by government and these are about 236 registered private mini-buses which are used as local transportation.

Rail
The important railway junction is Madurai Junction of Southern Tamil Nadu. After Chennai division, Madurai Junction is the second largest revenue division of Southern railway. The trains are direct connected to Madurai with major cities such as Chennai, Bhopal, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore, Vijaywada, Jaipur, Thanjavur, Hyderabad, Rameswaram, Visakhapatnam, Tirunelveli, Trivandrum, Trichy, Coimbatore, Kanyakumari and Kollam. The project related to Mono rail is announced by State government.

Air
Madurai International Airport is an important airport of Tamil Nadu situated at 12 kilometers from the city. The domestic flight services are offered to the major cities of India while the international services are available for Colombo, Dubai, Sri Lanka and UAE. The carrier services are available through Air India, SpiceJet, Jet Airways and Mihin Lanka. Lakhs of people used to travel through the air services.
