Important Architectures Of Kolkata

The city of Kolkata is situated on the bank of the Hooghly River, which a tribute of the Ganges also divides it from Howrah. The favourite destination of the travellers in Kolkata is the south part of the Howrah Bridge and areas along with it like BBD Bagh, Chowringhee.

Established in 1933, the ACADEMY OF FINE ARTS holds impressive collection of Indian art, contemporary Indian art, medieval Bengal and Indian textiles, sculptures, miniature paintings, manuscripts. In the 18th century Armenian architects Aga Nazar and Katchik Arfiel designed the Armenian church, which is the oldest church in the Kolkata. This church was firstly model as a wood structure, which was replaced by a brick and mortar building later. This church also have the three famous oil paintings, which was paint by the artist A.E. Harris.

ASIATIC SOCIETY: Formed in 1784 by Sir William Jones and a group of Europeans with Warren Hastings as it's first patron has library inside with approximately 149,000 volumes including 8,000 rare Sanskrit, Arabic, Persian and Hindi manuscripts. This society consist of the great archaeological relics, geological and ethnological specimens. The library also has an interesting collection of manuscripts, coins, inscriptions and engravings. The Ashokan rock edict is a unique item here.

BIRLA PLANETARIUM: Inaugurated in 1963, this planetarium was the first of it's kind in India. This Planetarium inherits an an astronomical observatory equipped with a Celestron C-14 Telescope.

MARBLE PALACE: This palace was built by the local landlord Rajendra Mullick using Italian marble in the year 1855. This palace consist of the interior courtyard with a great royality rooms. The building has paintings of Rubens, Reynolds.
