History Kochi Ernakulam

Kochi city was the seat of the princely state till the British period. Olden Proof of the existence of Kochi has been traced in Tripunithura. Cochin State was formed in 1102 A.D. by the splitting up of Kulasekhara. In 1503, Kochi was taken over by the Portuguese and in 1663 the Dutch came to the city by overtaking the Portuguese. From 1814 the city came under the British till India's independence.

Before the entrance of the Portuguese, the history of Kochi is somewhat abstruse. Kochi arise as an independent kingdom from the damages of the Kulasekhara Empire. The appearance of the Portuguese in Kochi proved to be turning point in its history. The Kochi Rajas readily welcomed the Portuguese, seeing in them a valuable ally against the common enemy, the Zamorin of Calicut.). By 17th century,the Dutch had controlled to grab the Kochi seaport. The subsequent Kochi rulers turned out to be incompetent, till Saktan Tampuran or Rama Varma ascended the throne in 1790. He attest to be an strong cheif,and Kochi developed under him. However, in 1795, Kochi passed into the hands of the British who ruled the territory till India gained independence.

After the independence of India in 1947, in the year 1956, Kerala state was formed by the unification of three provinces of Travancore, Malabar and Kochi. In the year 1967, Corporation of Kochi was formed. Kochi was the first lordly state, which joined the indian Union. Afterall, Kochi has alter one of the important cities of the country and most important city of Kerala.
