The exotic and ‘cool’ Kangra was known by many names in the past. This ancient city of forts and temples was earlier known by the name ‘Nagarkot’ founded by Katoch rulers. It was historically also known as ‘Bhimnagar’. The supposition behind this name was that Kangra was founded by Raja Bhima, who was Yudhisthira’s younger brother.
Kangra was once a part of Great Nepal and occupied by the Nepalese. The Sikh warrior and King Maharaja Ranjit Singh fought the Nepalese army and drove them out of Kangra. Later on, somewhere in the mid 19th century Kangra came under the control of the British.
The earthquake on 4th April in the year 1905 shook the Kangra ground. It destroyed the Devi Vajreshwari Temple which was known for its riches and was the wealthiest of all temples in the North of India. This earthquake also damaged the Kangra fort apart from taking lives of thousands of people in this area.
Finally in the year 1948 Kangra was made a part of India again by Raja Druv Dev Chand Katoch. And it has been a serene, beautiful and an important piece of India’s tourism since then.
