Indore History is attached with the history of the Holkar State. Malhar Rao Holkar, was the founder of
the Hokars house. He was born in 1693 AD. He was rewarded with the gift of territories that comprised
Indore as his brave and soldierly qualities brought him to the forefront under the Peshwa.
Malhar Rao was succeeded by his grandson on his death. His Mother who was without issue ascended
the throne. Ahilya Bai was one of the chief Maratha personalities and an outstanding woman ruler of
India. Her main ambition was to advertise good fortune of the region and its people. She was the
uncommon Indian royalty who was immortalize in her lifetime.
Due to the endless love of Ahilya Bai
with Indore, the state capital Maheshwar was shifted to Indore in 1811 AD after her death.
Now,the Statue of Ahilya Bai is situated at the mid of the Rajwada city. Before the formation of
Madhya Bharat State in 1948, Indore went on as the State capital.
At one time, the Indore city was recognize by other separate names. Indreshwar was the first predicted
name of city named after the Indreshwar Temple in the city. Before Indreshwar was used, it was
recognize as Ahilyanagari.
