Hisar was founded by Firoz Shah Tughlaq in 1354 AD and it was then known as
Hisar e Firoza which means Fort of Firoz in Arabic. Firoz Shah established canals
to brought water of the river Yamuna. At that time Ghaggar and Dishadvati rivers
once passed through Hisar, later on their course was changed. During Mughal
Empire, Emperor Akbar removed Firoza from its name and it was simply known
as Hisar.
Archaeological excavations linked Hisar history to pre Harappan culture and
to the Aryans. Then It was came under many dynasties from Maurya to the
Guptas.
After India got freedom it was part of Punjab. When Punjab was divided into two
states in 1966, Hisar was made the part of Haryana. Due to its significant
development in steel industries it was named “Steel City of India”.
