At first visible sight you feel the daily drudgeries melt away. Floating in a sacred space, unconnected to the trivial and mundane, the Darbar Sahib is the most sacred pilgrim spots for the Sikhs. Instead of building the temple on a high plinth in the Hindu style, Guru Arjan Dev had buid it sunken so that worshippers had to go down the steps in order to enter it. The Sikhs all over the world wish to pay visit Harmandir Sahib and pay their obeisance.This gold-plated two storeyed structure features copper cupolas and white marble walls encrusted with precious stones arranged in decorative Islamic-style floral patterns. The idea of Harmandar Sahab was first conceived by Guru Arjan dev ji, who himself designed it with four doorways, representing the four religions. The upper half of the building is said to have been built by Maharaja Ranjit Singh using approximately 400 Kg of gold leaf. The interior of the Shish Mahal is ornamented with small pieces of mirror, of various sizes and shapes, skillfully inlaid in the ceiling, and walls richly embellished with designs, mostly floral in character. Memorial stones dot the compelx, most bearing a mute testimony to the Sikh’s glorious military tradition.
As the impatient devotees stand eagerly packed like sardines, for a glimpse as the Palki Sahab advances. Adorned in gold, the Palki Sahab is taken by the Granthi- the head Priest, who carries Guru Granth Sahab ji cushioned over his head. Worshippers pour in from across the world, to attend this auspicious ceremony.
The Parkash Ceremony, which takes place the next morning, the Guru Granth Sahab is brought in the gurudwara again. The crowds stand their waiting impatiently to grab a chance to carry the palki, as it is considered a blessing. The guru Granth Sahib is then placed under a velvet canopy- Chandowa, on a velvet cushion and silk laid on Manji Sahab. The sangat- worshippers, surround in peace, and listen to vaaq- message of the lord, for the day. Without these magical words, the divine journey is incomplete. In the evening Rahras Sahib Path (prayer) fills the air. Then Aarti, Kirtan Sohila Sahib path concluding with Ardas at night, ends the daily temple services. The Dukh Banjan Beri Sahab, The Akal Takht, The Har Ki Pauri, Guru Ka Langar, Central Sikh Museum, Berbaba Buddha ji, Shri Guru Ramdas Niwas are strucure inside the Golden Temple, which cannot be missed when you visit the holy palace.
