Ajmer is one of the most popular cities in the Indian state of Rajasthan, located 135 kilometers away from Jaipur. Ajmer is the pilgrimage center of the Sufi Saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti and the source for visiting Pushkar. The city was founded in the 7th century by Ajayraj Singh Chauhan. From 1149-1192 CE, Prithviraj Chauhan ruled Ajmer and Delhi during the latter half of the 12th century. In the year 1193, Muhammad of Ghor, the founder of Delhi Sultanate, conquered Ajmer.
In the year 1818, Marathas sold the city to the East India Company for 50,000 rupees; thereafter, Ajmer and Marwar became part of the colonial British Raj. Ajmer became part of the Rajasthan state in 1956. ‘Ajmer’ has been derived from the word ‘Ajay Meru’ and the meaning of this word is invincible hill. Ajmer is surrounded by Aravali Mountains and the lowest slopes of Taragarh hill. The city is also called as the Heart of Rajasthan and the City of Unity due to its diversity. According to the Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojna (HRIDAY) scheme, Ajmer has been selected as one of the heritage cities of India.
