Delhi city heavily depend on the railway transportation to cater the load of passengers for long and short distance. The long route rail transport is available from three station called Delhi Junction, New Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station. The Anand Vihar Railway station officially opened on 19 December 2009 by the past Union Railway Minister, Mamata Banerjee and chief Minister of Delhi, Shila Dikshit. This terminal is largest railway station among others in Delhi covers over 42 hectares. It caters most of East bound trains from Delhi and other stations. It connects the Northern areas like Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Uttarakhand. It works under the control of the Delhi division of Northern Railway Zone of administration Indian Railway.
The facilities of Railway station are booking office, booking counters, waiting halls, facilities for handicapped passengers, separate arrival and departure areas, cloak rooms, reservation halls, toilets, parcel and luggage office, parking areas, operational and service accommodation. It also provides the facility of ATM, touch system inquiry systems, food plazas, commercial and maintenance offices, computerized ticketing facility system, foreign exchange counters, retiring rooms and dormitories. It has separate parcel facility, two escalators and six lifts. In the railway station building has a special heritage gallery and custom-made subways for the physically challenged passengers.
