Bhagalpur, a city of historical importance is situated on the southern banks of the river Ganges in the Indian state of Bihar. It is the 3rd largest city of Bihar and the administrative headquarters of Bhagalpur division and Bhagalpur district. The city is famous for its silk production, due to which it is also known as Silk City. The name Bhagalpur has etymologically been derived from the word Bhagdatpuram, meaning the City of Good Luck.
According to Mahabharata, the city was the capital of Anga, a kingdom ruled by Karna (a great warrior). During the ancient period, the city was known as Bhagadatt-Puram and finds its mention in Mahabharata, Ramayana and Panchtantra.
