Since it began operation, the McMaster Nuclear Reactor (MNR) has been the largest university reactor in the Commonwealth. It is also the second-largest research reactor in the whole of North America. It is a "pool-type" reactor with a core of enriched uranium fuel that is moderated and cooled by distilled water. While the MNR is primarily used for research and the production of medical isotopes, the MNR also serves students in nuclear engineering, medical and health physics, and other applied radiation sciences.
McMaster University - Hamilton provides a wide range of irradiation, laboratory and holding facilities, including a cyclotron, an accelerator, a small-angle neutron-scattering detector, and wide-angle neutron scattering facilities. The cyclotron is used for the production of fluorine-18, which is used for research purposes; in particular, for the development of novel molecular imaging agents.
