Indian Institute of Technology - IIT Delhi is among the seven Institutes of Technology created as centers of excellence for higher training, research and development in science, engineering and technology in India. Established as College of Engineering in the year 1961, the Institute was later declared as an Institution of National Importance under the "Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 1963" and was renamed "
Indian Institute of Technology - IIT Delhi ".

HRH Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, laid the keystone of the Institute on January 27, 1959. The Institute was inaugurated by Prof. Humayun Kabir who was the Union Minister for Scientific Research and Cultural Affairs on August 21, 1961. The Institute buildings were formally opened by Dr.Zakir Hussain, ex President of India, on March 2, 1968.
Indian Institute of Technology - IIT Delhi is situated at Hauz Khas in South Delhi, which is a landmark place in the colorful and chequered history of Delhi. The campus of the Indian Institute of Technology - IIT Delhi is spread across an area of 320 acres. The campus area has been divided into four functional zones namely: Residential zone for students, Residential zone for the faculty and staff, Academic zone for academic buildings and workshops and Cultural-cum-social and recreational zone for students.
The Indian Institute of Technology - IIT Delhi main academic building accommodates different teaching and research activities. Though all departments are separate entities with a courtyard around, all the departments constitute an integrated complex. Heavy engineering laboratories are placed on the ground floor while light laboratories on the first floor, the tutorial rooms, classrooms and project rooms are located on the second floor. Separate offices have been given to every member of the teaching staff next to his laboratory. The campus also offers different amenities like staff club, hospital, shopping centre, bank, post office, telecom centre, community centre, stadium, playing fields, etc.
Indian Institute of Technology - IIT Delhi offers courses in undergraduate,graduate and foreign national programmes. The foreign nationals keen to get admission to a post-graduate programmes (M.Sc./M.Tech./M.S. (Research)/ M.Des./ Ph.D.) at IIT Delhi under this Fellowship programme, are required to apply to the Indian High Commissions/Embassies as the case may be, in their respective countries.
