As one of the Country’s smallest universities, Abertay is known for having student community of both local and international students. Around one fifth of Abertay's students are from outside the United Kingdom. Abertay’s main strengths being its size, the sense of community and ‘open spaces’approach to education and teaching results in initiating many interesting collaborative research projects, knitting together for example psychology and animation, or urban water management and computer games technology.
Campus: Abertay University - Dundee is located on a city centre Campus, with all of its buildings around a quarter of a mile of each other. Shops, recreational facilities and train stations are at a convenient distance. The main buildings, Old College, Kydd Building, White Space, Centre and Hannah Maclure Centre and cinema and some accommodation are in the Bell Street complex, grouped around the University's outstanding award.
University of Abertay Dundee offers a variety of different types of residential accommodation, either directly leased by the University or privately owned for students. The University of Abertay Dundee have five self-catering residences which offer a vast range of high standard accommodation. The size of the accommodation varies from single bedsits to multi-occupancy flats. They are situated within convenient walking or travelling distance to the University.
All their flats are furnished with standard kitchen facilities. There are now a large number of flats available with en-suite facilities. This also includes 24-hour campus security service and an on-call caretaker. Alloway Halls, where many of their younger students stay, also has a resident caretaker on-site In the self-catering flats, which are grouped together on different sites, students have their very own study bedroom and share a communal living/kitchen area. Students have daily communication with the people in their own flats and the other flats situated on the same site. The lease for all residences is inclusive of the full duration of the academic session, including the Christmas and Easter vacations.
Infrastructure: Abertay University - Dundee campus itself is an assorted mixture of everything from 16th-century castles to outstanding award-winning library. The heart of the University lies in Bell Street, with most teaching departments, research centres, offices and the library all within just a few yards of each other. Located on the ground floor of the University's Kydd Building, White Space is a distinct knowledge environment for students, staff and local businesses. Opened in 2007 and with a diverse mix of disciplines, this creative environment is now a flourishing hub of activity.
Library: The facilities at Abertay are outstanding and getting better. The Bernard King Library has set the benchmark for all British universities. This superb learning environment comprises of fully equipped seminar rooms for teaching information and IT skills, 6 group study rooms, and the Centre for Language Learning and Self-Study. Abertay's Student Centre is in the heart of the friendly city campus, just yards from the award-winning library and main teaching buildings.
Sports centre: There is also a revitalized gym that is on campus, making it perfect to use in-between classes. For a minimal membership, one can use 15 strength stations, 14 cardio vascular stations and as much training advice as one wants. Abertay Sports Injuries Centre provides a wide-ranging service to everyone and is delivered by university’s staffs that are highly qualified in a range of areas counting the diagnosis of injuries, rehabilitation advice, screening and advice on suitable training methods. They are also skilled in massage and acupuncture.
Abertay University GameLab comprises of two main teaching areas, an octagonal pod area housing 40 computer stations, and sophisticated development areas housing 50 computer stations used for the high-end game and graphics development. The Muslim Prayer Room is looked after by the Abertay Islamic Society and is located on Level 2, Old College, and Room 2518c.
